True handmade rugs carry small asymmetries — they are signatures, not flaws. Flip the corner: you should see knot bumps and a design that mirrors the front with clarity.
Synthetic copies often feel uniformly stiff or too glossy. Press into the pile; hand-spun wool springs back slowly and smells faintly of lanolin, not plastic.
Provenance protects weavers. Ethical sellers name regions and workshops; they welcome questions about dye sources and lead times for custom dimensions.
